Restorative Dental Treatments
It is important for patients to understand that dentistry involves fixing the problems that you may currently have and also preventing future problems. Your first visit to our office includes your full set of x-rays. Complete oral evaluation and oral cancer screening is very important to us. This visit lets the doctor and patient understand not only what needs to be done clinically, but what might be done esthetically to enhance a patient's smile.
Dentures: There are various types of complete dentures. A conventional full denture is made and placed in the patient’s mouth after the remaining teeth are removed and tissues have healed which may take several months. An immediate complete denture is inserted as soon as the remaining teeth are removed. The dentist takes measurements and makes models of the patient’s jaws during a preliminary visit. With immediate dentures, the denture wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period.
Dental Sealants: A sealant is a plastic material that is usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth—premolars and molars. This plastic resin bonds into the depressions and grooves (pits and fissures) of the chewing surfaces of back teeth. The sealant acts as a physical barrier to prevent oral bacteria from collecting and creating the acid eviroment that allows tooth decay to develop. Sealants are commonly done on children, however this procedure is also highly recommended on adults. There is no pain in applying sealants and the cost of preventing tooth decay by placing sealants is much less than treating oral disease once it has developed.
Root Canal Therapy: The most common procedure done in endodontics is root-canal therapy, which involves the removal of diseased pulp tissue. The aim of treatment is to remove irreversibly inflamed, or necrotic pulp tissue before infection sets in. If the pulp tissue becomes infected, caused by bacteria from inside the tooth, the infection can leak out of the tooth's root and make the surrounding bone ill and painful or cause an abscess to form. Once the diseased pulp tissues are removed, the body's defense system can then repair the damage created by disease. Usually, this will require 2-3 visits to your dentist.
Composite Resin Fillings: Most of us have had amalgam fillings (silver) or gold filling restorations. Some amalgam fillings were what we have called mercury fillings, as some amalgam fillings contained mercury. Metal fillings were effective, but very conspicuous and tended to blacken in color over time. Composite resin dental fillings were created as an alternative to traditional metal dental fillings. Tooth fillings colored to look like a natural tooth are known as Composite Resin Dental Fillings, are made of of BISMA bisphenol-a-glycidyl-metharcylate with fillers called silica and glass-ceramics. Composite Resin Dental Fillings are strong, durable, and make for a very natural looking smile.
Dental Implants: Dental implants are fixtures of titanium which are surgically screwed into your jaw bone. The implant is an anchor for a naturally-appearing false tooth or a set of false teeth. The success rate of dental implants depends on where the implants are placed and their purpose. They are typically best placed in the front portion of your lower jaw. Implants are great for replacing missing teeth. It is important that you have enough bone in the area of the missing teeth for the implants to be attached to. Implants are not only used to replace one tooth, but rather people missing most, if not all, of their teeth benefit greatly as well. Implants are increasingly being used to replace certain types of bridges and removable partial dentures.
Periodontal Treatment: Periodontal scaling and root planing otherwise known as deep cleaning. When plaque and tartar starts to build up it causes the gum to inflame and pockets begin to form. When the pocket deepens the disease begins to destroy the gum and bone. As more bone is destroyed, the tooth is in danger of falling out. In order to prevent gum disease, patients are advised to floss daily When a patients pockets are deepened, scaling and root planing is needed Scaling just below the gum line reaches tartar deposits that cant be removed in an ordinary dental cleaning. Root planing smooths rough spots on the roots where bacteria lies.
